Gone are the days when pickup trucks were used only to tow heavy stuff, today we rate them for their plush interiors and tech facilities. The present Chevrolet Silverado 1500 isn’t really as elegant or tech-oriented as the Ford F-150 and half-ton Dodge Ram, but that’s going to change as the 2022 model comes with a host of upgrades.
Apart from the new off-road ZR2 variant (we will discuss it in a separate blog), the truck offers plenty of upgrades inside. Chevy has updated the dashboard styling by adding more classy materials to it. Before you start comparing this Chevy’s truck with Ford and Ram’s offerings, understand that the modernized interior is only available for the LT model and up.
The range-topping High Country comes equipped with new stuff such as open-pore wood. It should put the truck in the league of similarly priced F-150 Platinum and Ram 1500 Limited. However, we can only tell about it after the test drive.
The 2022 Chevrolet Silverado now offers a configurable 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. Moreover, you can find a landscape-oriented 13.4-inch touchscreen. Comparing it to the F-150 or Ram 1500, the largest display you get from them is only 12.0 inches. Besides, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the new infotainment system allows you to benefit from Google’s voice assistance, maps, and app store.
Perhaps, the biggest highlight of the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado is GM’s hands-free-driving Assist, Super Cruise. The automaker is offering it only for the High Country at the moment, but we believe it will be accessible on all the trims later on.
Super Cruise has the capability to drive the vehicle itself in specific conditions without any assistance from the driver. Drivers can also use it while pulling the trailer but the lane-changing feature won’t work in this condition.
The new upgrades aren’t only limited to the top-of-the-line trim. Chevy has also updated the lower trims arming with an assortment of driver-assistance features that now come standard. We are talking about automated emergency braking, automatic high-beam headlights, lane-keeping assist and other safety and assistance facilities.
Moreover, the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado boasts a new front-end design and wing-shaped running lights on some models offering an animated lighting sequence.
Talking about the powertrain, the new Silverado still uses a turbocharged 2.7-lire gasoline engine. However, the engineers have polished and retuned the mill and eight-speed automatic transmission. The result is a 20 per cent better torque response; the new truck generates 420 pound-feet compared to the 383 pound-feet of torque of the present model.
Furthermore, the Duramax Diesel 3.0-lire inline-six models come with chassis upgrades and support for the Max Trailering Package. It allows the vehicle to tow up to 13,300 pounds (previously it was 9,500 pounds).
The automaker said the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado will hit the roads in spring 2022, but they didn’t reveal the price yet.
