Hyundai showcased the new Ioniq 6 for the US markets at the LA Auto Show yesterday, after its worldwide debut in July. The US model looks similar to the global model except for one change. It comes with a 0.1 higher drag coefficient. The reason is the camera side mirror, which doesn’t meet NHTSA regulations. It will not be accessible to North American customers.
The all-new Ioniq 6 gives buyers two battery choices – 53.0- and 77.4-kilowatt hours. The entry-level model comes with a single motor attached to the rear axle creating 149 horsepower (111 kilowatts) and 258 pound-feet (350 Nm) of torque.
The bigger battery is available for both the single-motor rear-wheel-drive and dual-motor all-wheel-drive models. With the 77.4 kWh battery, the RWD model generates 225 hp (168 kW) and an identical torque as with the smaller battery. The dual-motor Ioniq 6 produces 320 hp (239 kW) and 446 lb-ft (605 Nm) of torque.
The automaker claims 340 miles of range with a single motor and a bigger battery. The dual-motor Ioniq 6 should deliver 310 miles. Charging at a 350-kilowatt fast charger will juice up the battery from 10 to 80 per cent in 18 minutes. Besides, a five-minute charge can add 65 miles for a quick commute within the city. The Level 2 charger would take about seven hours to recharge.
The Ioniq 6 uses the company’s E-Global Modular Platform, offering a flat floor, giving an expansive feel. Inside we can see two big displays – both 12.3-inch. These include the instrument cluster and the infotainment screen that look like one big screen under a single piece of glass.
Hyundai will offer over-the-air updates to alter different settings like throttle response, steering sensitivity, and other features. The Hyundai SmartSense advanced driver assistance system is also a part of the deal.
This new battery-electric vehicle is a part of 17 BEVs the company plans to introduce by 2030. It will hit the U.S. roads next spring, offering buyers a two-year unrestricted 30-minute charging turns from Electrify America. Introduction in the UAE is still a mystery. The pricing will be available before the launch.
