This Toyota’s Compact Electric Truck Ready to Conquer Maverick Territory

Toyota is going all out for Japan Mobility 2023. The company will have a strong presence, showcasing various prototypes, including an electric pickup named EPU that exhibits a design closely aligned with potential production. Could this serve as a glimpse into a forthcoming Tacoma EV? While Toyota dubs it a “next-gen mid-sized pickup truck concept,” the specifications don’t quite align.

In their official statement, Toyota indicates that the EPU measures just over 16 feet in length, with a 132-inch wheelbase, characteristics more reminiscent of compact trucks like the Ford Maverick. With a 6-foot width and a height of just under 6 feet, it seems to target a smaller market segment. Similar to the Maverick, it adopts a monocoque structure and is a compact four-door model accommodating up to five occupants.

Naturally, there’s a substantial contrast when it pertains to the internal components. In this regard, Toyota currently lacks specific details concerning the EPU’s propulsion system, except for confirming its electric nature. Consequently, there may not be conventional engine components under the hood, though the presence of off-road tires hints at a potential dual-motor setup.

Undoubtedly, in the realm of unconventional ideas, this one appears closer to being realized than many others. The EPU boasts a comprehensive interior setup, integrating a unified digital display for both driver and infotainment controls within a stepped dashboard design featuring a flat lower section and a driver’s yoke. The exterior also exhibits production-ready characteristics, as it reveals a compact bed at the rear with a versatile tailgate that can bifurcate horizontally, increasing cargo capacity, hinting at Toyota’s focus on competing with the Maverick.

Why wouldn’t the renowned Japanese company consider Ford‘s compact pickup? The Maverick has enjoyed robust demand since its debut, with the Hyundai Santa Cruz as its sole genuine rival. While various manufacturers focus on large electric trucks, introducing a compact pickup during the next-gen launch might take others by surprise.

The EPU will be showcased alongside several other Toyota prototypes, like the Land Cruiser Se, at the Japan Mobility Show in Tokyo. The event is open to the public starting on October 26.
