Toyota has added a new model for the Yaris Cross in Japan. Named GR Sport, the new variant does not only have its own styling but also comes with various mechanical tweaks.

Exterior

Starting with the design, the Gazoo Racing Sport gets mesh grilles both on the front and rear, along with red brake calipers and 10-spoke wheels.

The small crossover also gets a tougher structure and an updated suspension. The engineers have added additional bracing in the middle of the underbody and on the back for enhanced steering stability and lower body roll.

The modified suspension drops the ride height by 0.39 inches (10 millimeters). Besides, the engineers have re-tuned the springs, shocks, and electric power steering. The Yaris Cross GR Sport wears 18-inch Falken FK510 rubber.

Interior

The interior, too, gives a unique feeling compared to the other variant in the lineup. The unique front seats use a combination of synthetic leather and Air Nubuck material. The three-spoke steering wheel sports leather and GR emblem, while the center console employs dark gray metallic paint. Additionally, the shift knob uses a leather cover, while the pedals receive aluminum covers.

Powertrains

Toyota will offer this new variant in two powertrains; a 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol generating 118 horsepower (88 kilowatts) and the same mill with hybrid support creating 90 hp (67 kW). The only drivetrain choice is front-wheel, though the other variant in the Yaris Cross also offers an all-wheel drive option. Additionally, the hybrid powertrain now uses an updated controller for an increased accelerator pedal response.

Price

The Yaris Cross GR Sport will hit the roads in Japan next month at a starting price of ¥2,367,000 ($17,166 at present exchange rates) for the petrol-powered version.  The price comprises Japan’s consumption tax. The hybrid model is more expensive at ¥2,750,000 ($19,940). Will it arrive at our shores in the UAE? We do not know yet. Right now, the Yaris is only available here in sedan guise.

Toyota unveiled the Yaris Cross last year, and this new model strengthens this product’s portfolio. Its rugged appearance comes with the updated front and rear styling, while there are some mechanical tweaks to make the drive sportier.
